A year in the life of HollyWords Publicity

A lot can happen in a year.

Its hard to believe that our journey with now seasoned celebrity Duane Howard ('Elk Dog' in 'The Revenant') began just 1 year ago in Los Angeles with his first of many red carpet moments. Following close behind, young rising stars, Mitchell KummenCory Grüter-AndrewChristian Convery, Katelyn Mager, and Sean Kyer joined us and VIP events allowed us to introduce J. Alex BrinsonAdrian HoughAlain Chanoine to the Hollywood elite.

With determination and most importantly a carefully crafted plan, time and time again we worked to bring our clients beyond their expectations, just ask Rob Hayter or Kiefer O’Reilly how they felt with our support. The truth is we loved shattering ceilings and left little to chance.  In a fitting turn, this week we circle back to LA to introduce the media to Havana Guppy at LA's Red Carpet Premiere of the HULU original series, 'Shut Eye'.

Our year tells it's own story, so:

Sep 19, 2016 - We have just returned from the screenings, premieres, red carpets and parties that make up the glamourous Toronto International Film Festival ...

It was a whirlwind of fun and excitement. We started off weeks prior to getting on the plane from Vancouver to Toronto, arranging for those hard-to-get party invites and announcing through Variety one of our client's - Adrian Hough's - role in the TIFF16 world premiere of Walter Hill's '(re)Assignment'. We also had his upcoming guest appearances in two new TV series, 'Travelers' and 'Aftermath' announced by Variety ... A great way to start the fest!

My first night in T.O. involved escorting both Adrian and another client of ours, Alain Chanoine (Incubus, Enchantress's - played by Cara Delevingne - brother in 'Suicide Squad') to eOne's annual, hard-to-get-into amazing TIFF party ... Tough job but someone had to do it! ;) Needless-to-say, we all had an absolute blast, saw many old friends and made many new ones ... A great, great evening ... thank you to eOne's Natalie and Tory!

Another evening to highlight was, of course, the TIFF16 world premiere of '(re)Assignment' in which Adrian plays Sigourney Weaver's brother, and who is the reason behind her 'problem' with Michelle Rodriguez's transgender assasin character.

Dedication and advocacy for our clients is what we offer. We build the stories and ensure that they are supported with live and digital events. We coach our clients from their 1st interview to their walk down Hollywood's biggest red carpets or to star-studded parties such as the Armani Oscars one Holly escorted Duane to below this February. Introducing clients to opportunities internationally is hard work that we are proud to be a part of.

Mar 19, 2016 - In this blog we are showcasing the Oscar 2016 weekend that we coordinated for Duane Howard, the highlights being The Academy's Hair & Makeup Symposium, the exclusive Armani Oscars 2016 Party and, of course, the Oscars themselves!

 DH Oscar Montage

Duane's Oscar weekend began at 2PM on the Saturday with a VIP reception at The Academy. HollyWords Publicity (HWP) had coordinated with the event producers of The Academy's Hair & Makeup Symposium and The Academy itself to have Duane appear as The Revenant's Oscar-nominated team's special guest.

 DH H & M Symposium

At 5:30PM we swept Duane away from the Academy and escorted him into Armani's exclusive party on Rodeo Drive.

A twenty-one year expert in film & television publicity and a former actress herself, HWP CEO Holly Carinci introduced Duane to the A-list stars attending the party, all of whom were thrilled to meet him and actually happy to have Holly take their picture. The rest of the photos tell the evening's story ...

The day of the Oscars was wrought with emotion for our client. Duane had lived on the streets as a child and struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. Now thirty years later he was heading to the Oscars ...

DH HWP social media report

This concludes our Oscar 2016 Weekend blog. I hope that we have demonstrated what publicity can do for an actor, even a complete unknown with their first 'big' role, over a relatively short period of time.

If you are ever wondering if the time is right it probably is but, rest assured, we do not take on anyone unless they are.

Note: This was only one campaign from November - February. We work with Empire, Digital Spy and many more out of Europe; THR, Variety, ET ... everybody out of North America.

Our rates are competitive with the advantage of  the significant savings our clients enjoy through the exchange rate.

Mar 16, 2016 - In this blog I will be sharing with you the red carpet Los Angeles premiere of 'The Revenant'.

I hope that your new year is being good to you as we launch into an exciting 2016 pilot season :) Soon many actors (and directors and producers! ;)) are going to need publicity and for this reason my team and I are excited to share with you the results of one our most recent publicity campaigns.

Below are the highlights of our work for a previously unknown actor, Duane E Howard. Duane has a nice supporting role ('Elk Dog', the Arikara warrior searching for his daughter) in the mammoth multi Golden Globe and Oscar winning film 'The Revenant'.

At the risk of stating the obvious, everything below cannot be acquired for all working actors, while much more can be garnered for others.

 Duane Howard LA Times

HollyWords Publicity (HWP) arranged for a feature interview with the Los Angeles Times. We ran both the intvw and the photo shoot from our hotel, The Hollywood Roosevelt, the morning of the film’s premiere. This interview was featured in both the newspaper's online and print versions which you can see by clicking on the graphic.

Holly Carinci ‘warmed up’ the red carpet by walking the length of it pre-event, kibitzing with the media on behalf of her client. She then walked Duane E Howard through his interviews in front of the masses for the December 16th LA premiere of ‘The Revenant’ held at the TCL Chinese Theatre. Holly ensured that Duane was interviewed by all of the other majors.

Sometimes a ‘makeover’ with access to designer outfits are just what the manager, agent and publicist need to convince their networks that their actor has the look and/or is a star already. We love to do these :) Below is Duane's transformation into Duane Howard the professional actor, and on to Duane E Howard the star.

Jan 04, 2016 - BUSY end of 2015 & beginning of 2016, mostly with 'The Revenant's Duane Howard ...

I hope that everyone had an AMAZING holiday season!

A quick update on why I haven't been blogging ... We've been SWAMPED! :)

This is a lame apology of sorts for not being on top of this blog for the last few months. We did some work for Aleks Paunovic and Briana Buckmaster before heading directly into a campaign for Duane Howard and his role on 'The Revenant'. That tiny, hardly-hyped movie has kept us enourmously busy for some inexplicable reason :D

Oct 02, 2015 - Starter List of Media Contacts for Independent Filmmakers & Actors - Demystifying Publicity Blog #7

Better late than never!

My apologies for not getting this Media List up on Tuesday as I said that I would in my last blog ... It became a wonderfully busy week for me! :)

Before downloading the list please read the following:

  1. If you have enough lead time before the screening of your film, write a brief introduction - no more than 4 sentences - and send it to each of the contacts listed, requesting their permission to add them to your distribution list. They will appreciate this.
  2. If they do not get back to you, go ahead and keep them on your list. If they do reply, make certain that you respect their decision.
  3. A follow-up email 3 days following the distribution of your media release is perfectly acceptable.
  4. A follow-up phone call may also be made, but only one. After that do not contact them again unless they ask you to.
  5. Fyi, often these media will post or go to print directly from your media release which is why it is so important to read my previous blog, #6, as it will increase your chances of being run.
  6. Be sure to thank them if they work with you!

Finally, a bit of work went into these blogs and this list in order to assist the indies and so would you please help to spread the word through twitter and please share the Facebook posting (and a page Like is always so very much appreciated ;)) as well as any other social media channels that you can utilize in order that as many independent filmmakers and actors as possible can benefit from all of this? Thank you very much!

Okay, here it is ... Good luck! (Best to save it as an electronic file rather than printing it)

Sep 25, 2015 - Independent Filmmakers’ & Actors’ Guide to Working w/ the Media - Demystifying Publicity Blog #6

With the film festival circuit already well-underway we thought that we

would provide some assistance to the many independent filmmakers who are braving this multi-faceted world, much of which is new to them like, for instance, the media.

We understand and admire the independent filmmakers and the actors who pour their time and talent into making art that means something to them; that allows them each to stretch and demonstrate their vault of talents, often for the first time. It’s exhilarating and liberating!!

The media side of things however can be frustrating and expensive, so we would like to help by giving you some insights on how to approach and, hopefully, work with the media. Then we’ll give you a starter list of media contacts, the latter of which will be available here next Tuesday, September 29th :)

Okay, we have lots to do so let’s just get to it!!

FilmFest Emotions

To be clear, this is not a standard “how to write a media release” blog, there are plenty of those out there. This is me sharing with you some of what I’ve learned over 21 years of doing this professionally:

  1. When you write an “Announcement”, make it brief, informative, to-the-point … with a touch of something that makes it stand out from everyone else’s. So when you announce that you are going to be screening at, say, VIFF, above all of the listed details (Title, length, competition, director, producer(s), stars, venue, date, time, etc and not in that order, follow the festival’s format preferences) write a headline that will make the media want to come and see your film. Not easy, I know, but you can do it!

  1. Every media release has its bragging rights. It can be an award-winning member of its team, or a star who has never acted before in their life! It could be great visual effects, no-visual-effects-all-acting; a good budget, a tiny budget; a really tough filming location, shot entirely in one room!! Every bragging point is a “media hook” so don’t miss out … make it the first list that you develope before writing your release. And don’t worry if you have just one bragging right … it’s enough :)

  1. An actual media release, not an ‘announcement’, is a story that contains a beginning, a middle and an end.  Your headline has a hook and your sub-headline, if you’re using one, provides that little bit of extra information needed to validate or explain your headline.

  1. Make the media ‘feel’ your release. Very few releases express well enough the emotion behind the project and/or the filmmakers and actors. In the case of indies there are usually 3 or 4 great story-tellers. There is the writer/story, the producers, the director and the actors. Each production’s story angles have different strengths so be sure to use them and be clear on them … make them part of your theme. Try not to use every one that I listed unless you just can’t help yourself ;)

  1. Use quotes. Be smart about it tho, no more than 2 - 3 sentences per quote and not more than one from each department that your are focusing on, i.e. the story-tellers I listed in 4.

  1. Do not, whatever you do, have more than 1 ½ pages of text … That’s not including your stills and your trailer, if you have one, which would be good if you did. :D

I am providing 3 examples of media releases (click on them to link to their original versions) in order for you to get a feel of different tones and themes as well as the standard length. Also, once you've linked thru to the originals, you can see how I included stills that, when clicked, go to their high-rez versions so that the media has the best artwork at hand to represent your great production … the vids also play and click thru to broadcast-quality clips.

Mitchell Kummen Ties That Bind Media Release      Aleks Paunovic Continuum Media Release      MA

Note: You do not need to deliver a media release that is as high-end as these, not at all. These are meant to give you ideas … You can always send the stills and the trailer as low-rez attachments with a note to the media informing them that they are available in print and broadcast quality. However, if you do want to ‘go for it’, there’s a free version of MailChimp that you can use to format a release similar to these.

Okay, that's it! You're ready to send to the media. Come back on Tuesday for a list of indie media contacts and some 'rules' as to how to approach them. Exciting!

:)
